This year's flagship BMW M8 coupe combines the best of all worlds with track-like performance, exceptional ride quality, and legendary BMW luxury. BMW offers the 2020 M8 in three configurations - the M8 Gran Coupe, the M8 Coupe, and the M8 Cabriolet Convertible. Prices for the BMW M8 in Vancouver start at $148,000, $151,000, and $160,500 respectively. So, what makes the M8 worth the extra cash for luxury car buyers? Here's a look:
World-Class Performance
All M8 models come equipped with the same engine - BMW's 4.4-litre, twin-turbo S63 V8. The high-powered plant puts out up to 600-HP and 553 pound-feet of torque in standard M8 editions. With the same engine, Competition models add 17-horsepower and no change in torque. The new M8 comes with an eight-speed automatic Steptronic transmission that features DriveLogic, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and sequential sport shift with drive mode select. A rear-biased all-wheel-drive system delivers torque-vectoring across the rear axle for improved grip and handling. Fuel consumption numbers come in at 10.5 l/100 km (combined) for coupe models, and 10.6 l/100 km (combined) for convertible configurations.
BMW also upgraded the drive mode select system for its flagship M8. A new setup button on the centre console allows for direct access to five available parameters. With the press of a button on the iDrive Controller, drivers can activate individual modes that alter characteristics for the engine, the suspension, the steering, the brakes, and the M xDrive. The system allows for different adjustments to the engine using the Efficient, Sport, and Sport Plus settings. Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus modes handle ride control through electronically controlled dampers. Comfort and Sport modes also control the M8's M-specific electromechanical steering as well as the new braking system. Deactivating Dynamic Stability Control brings the 4WD, 4WD SPORT and 2WD settings into play.
Luxury Comes Standard
Luxury, of course, comes standard on all BMWs and especially the M8. Merino leather upholstery, an Anthracite Alcantara headliner, and carbon fibre trim provide an ultra-luxurious feel to the M8's cabin. Notable comfort features include heated and ventilated front seats, as well as heated armrests, and a heated steering wheel. Dual-zone automatic climate control and factory-installed remote start add further comfort. Rain-sensing windshield wipers, soft-close automatic doors, and a power trunk-lid are just a few of the many convenience features that come standard on the 2020 BMW M8.
For entertainment, all 2020 M8 models come with a 16-speaker (9 tweeters, 5 midrange speakers and 2 bass speakers) Harman Kardon Surround Sound Audio System powered by a 464-watt amplifier. Along with AM, FM, and HD, the stock radio includes SiriusXM ( with a one-year All Access subscription), as well. A 270-mm colour, HD touchscreen controls the infotainment system, the drive mode settings, and a wide range of other functions.
Seamless Bluetooth connectivity opens the door to some fun tech features on the M8. In addition to hands-free calling, Apple CarPlay compatibility lets iPhone owners operate their favourite apps right on the M8's large colour screen. The system also has WiFi Hotspot capability and BMW includes the first three gigabytes, or first three months (whichever comes first) for free. As BMW's flagship coupe, the M8 comes standard with just about every comfort and convenience feature found on modern luxury vehicles.
