The BMW M4 first arrived in 2014, and was designed as a high-performance version of the popular 4-Series. With its increased engine power, partial carbon-fibre construction, and superior interior comforts it quickly became a standout model in the German manufacturer's lineup. What features does the latest release offer to 2020 buyers?
Body and Styling
The 2020 M4 is available either as a two-door coupe, or as a convertible with a retractable hardtop roof. Both versions offer a strong sports appearance, with a low back-sloping roofline, and a chunky, imposing front end with a double kidney grille and striking LED headlights.
The sports look is emphasized by 19-inch wheels as standard, with a 20-inch option available for a slightly more aggressive look.
Powertrain and Performance Features
The standard M4 powertrain consists of a 3.0L turbo inline six-cylinder engine, providing a hefty 425 horsepower and 406lb-ft of torque. With the coupe version this can be upgraded with the Competition package, which boosts the horsepower to 453hp and the torque to 443lb-ft, also adding adaptive suspension to handle the extra power.
All versions of the 2020 M4 are rear-wheel drive, with a choice of either a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, or a six-speed manual gearbox for a more hands-on driving experience.
Fuel Economy
Considering the horsepower levels, it's not surprising that the M4's fuel economy is on the thirstier side. Running on premium unleaded gasoline, official figures provide 14.5L / 100km in the city and 10.5L / 100km on the highway. However, when you experience the power and acceleration of the car, it's unlikely fuel economy will be at the forefront of your mind.
M4 Interior Features
The M4 carries its luxury styling over to the interior, which as standard features black cloth and leather upholstery with an aluminum dashboard trim. The sports seats feature adjustable lumber and side supports, with a powered driver memory.
The dual-zone air conditioning system has a remote control facility, while the side and rear-view mirrors offer auto-dimming to go alongside the adaptive LED headlights with auto high-beams.
For infotainment, the 8.8" multifunction touchscreen offers easy access to the media options, which include an integrated 200GB hard disk for audio and video storage. Smartphones are fully integrated over Bluetooth, and there are also options for wireless charging and Wi-Fi network support.
Safety Features
The 2020 BMW M4 contains many active and passive features, either as standard or as parts of upgrade packages. Highlights include:
