This new generation of 3 Series is known as the G20 and was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October. Expected to arrive at showrooms in March, 2019, it will be followed by a hybrid version a year later.
Four trims are anticipated, Advantage, Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport. All models will arrive with a generous list of standard features, including LED headlights and tail lights, automatic climate control, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers and 40:20:40 split folding rear seats. All will come with several driver assistance systems, including Lane Departure Warning and Collision Warning with braking intervention. Each will receive version 6 of BMW's famous iDrive infotainment system, complete with an 8.8-inch display. This system can be upgraded to a larger and more robust system if desired.
The newest generation of 3 Series will be lighter and more powerful than it's predecessor. Nearly all components are new; it shares very little with it's parent. It does, however, share a platform with the 5 Series, and will continue to boast a 50:50 weight balance.
Two gasoline engines are available, a 2.0L turbo and a 3.0L turbo; along with a pair of diesel engines. Some markets will see a 6-speed stick shift, but most will come packaged with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. While we don't have exact specs on those engines, we are expecting an increase of about 5-percent in power.
BMW's mandate with the new 3 Series was simple, to deliver a highly engaging driving experience. To make this happen, the car will have a wider stance for greater stability, as well as new steering, braking and suspension components. BMW says that the suspension elements of the M Sport package will be exceptional.
